On a single night in early April, a week to ten days out from the launch of the 49th San Francisco International Film Festival, San Franciscans all across the city will gather together in informal cineclubs with their friends and neighbors to watch one specially selected film in the largest citywide film screening in the country.
The event will draw on the wealth of cultural, social, corporate, political, and technological institutions unique to San Francisco to connect citizens from all facets of our community in the viewing and discussion of a single film. San Francisco has a long history of civic pride and engagement in the arts. San Francisco Movie Night will create yet another San Francisco institution for other cities to emulate.
Purpose
To build community and celebrate film in San Francisco, creating a citywide cultural moment unique to the Bay Area. To explore the ways in which new platforms, new work, and new ideas combine to create new audiences and new social relations.
How It Works
Through San Francisco Film Connect and its partners, San Franciscans will be given the opportunity to open their home or attend a local house party to screen a movie specially selected by San Francisco Film Society and Ironweed Film Club. The film will be provided on a limited-edition DVD through local retailers, media arts organizations, public institutions, project partners, etc., by Ironweed Films in association with the San Francisco Film Society and its citywide SF360 initiatives, and other leading media arts groups.
What the Night Holds
The film is only the beginning.
- Mayor Gavin Newsom will host a conference call with the film directors at 9:00 pm.
- Craig Stoll, chef from Delfina, will provide cooking instructions for a simple meal.
- Leading social networking sites and organizations (Craigslist, Friendster, Tribe, LinkedIn, MeetUp, InForum) will promote the house parties to their memberships.
- Social action lists, including Working Assets and MoveOn, will invite their members to join.
- Readymade Magazine will provide a do-it-yourself project to spice up the evening.
Cost
The DVD will be available for a nominal cost from retailers, and will be available for free for people who either volunteer with an associated nonprofit or subscribe to the Ironweed service.
