The creative team for the 45th San Francisco International Film Festival (April 18 – May 2) has produced a dramatic new trailer to publicize the Festival. Beginning March 27, the one-minute trailer will show in Bay Area movie theater chains including Century Theatres, AMC Theatres and Landmark Theatres, and on TV stations KRON, KQED, KTSF, Univision and Telefutura.
Mark Frankel, creative director of the San Francisco
office of Digitas, formulated the concept of using multiple images from films
in the Festival juxtaposed with text to get across the idea of the extraordinary
diversity and depth of human emotion portrayed in Festival films. The trailer
also uses the flower imagery initiated last year which has been carried forward
by art director Michael Manning. The trailer will also be streamed on the Festival
Web site www.sffs.org designed by SBI and Company.
The contemporary rock soundtrack for the trailer was written and produced by
Zack Smith, a prolific composer who has written for and performed with musicians
like Van Halen, Patti Smith, Malcolm McClaren and Scandal, the band he founded
in the 1980s. Four years ago, Smith founded Portfolio to write commercial tracks
for Apple Computer, Nike, Coca-Cola and other major clients.
Line producer Buzz Hays has been responsible for managing
the production of the trailer. After spending ten years as head of research
and development at Lucasfilm THX, Hays started his own independent company,
Stone’s Throw Films. He also served as co-producer on the Kevin Spacey film,
SWIMMING WITH SHARKS, which is screening at the Festival in connection
with Spacey’s receiving the Peter J. Owens Award for acting.
Online editing for the trailer was done by Ed Feldman at the state-of-the art facility, Bob and
Sheila’s Edit World, which lists Hal Riney, McCann Erickson and Young &
Rubicam among its clients.
