Big Nights at the 48th San Francisco International Film Festival; Opening Night, ZOOM! After Hours, Film Society Awards, Golden Gate Awards and Closing Night

OPENING NIGHT

Thursday, April 21

THE AX Directed by Costa-Gavras, starring José Garcia, Karin Viard, Olivier Gourmet and Yolande Moreau. A laid-off worker, devises a novel approach to finding a new job—by physically "eliminating" any fellow applicants. Based on an acclaimed novel by American author Donald E. Westlake, this mercilessly entertaining comedy puts outsourcing, downsizing and other 21st-century business trends where they belong: on the chopping block. After the screening, join the Opening Night celebration at Ghirardelli Square. Guests are invited to be a part of the ultimate block party while indulging in great food, fabulous beverages, cool jazz, hot funk, dancing and of course, chocolate! Costa-Gavras, Yolande Moreau and producer Michèle Ray-Gavras are scheduled to appear. Opening Night is sponsored by Sterling Vineyards.

ZOOM! After Hours

Tuesday, April 26

NOVEMBER Directed by Greg Harrison, starring Courteney Cox, Anne Archer and James LeGros. Sophia is a photographer struggling to separate reality and fantasy as she pieces together the mystery of her boyfriend's murder one photo and memory at a time in this mindbending psychological thriller. Following the film, the ZOOM! After Hours party will be held at Ruby Skye, conveniently located in San Francisco's theater district at 420 Mason Street. Partygoers are invited to continue the festivities at one of the hippest scenes in town for an after-film soiree, a late night evening of DJs, dancing and libations. Greg Harrison, Courteney Cox and producer Danielle Renfrew are scheduled to attend both the screening and party.

FILM SOCIETY AWARDS NIGHT

Thursday, April 28

The Film Society will be hosting a black-tie fundraiser gala honoring three Oscar—nominated talents in the world of cinema. San Francisco's Ritz-Carlton will serve as host for an evening filled with awards and peer tributes. The 48th San Francisco International Film Festival is proud to honor Academy Award—nominated Taylor Hackford with the 2005 Film Society Award for Lifetime Achievement in Directing, to be presented by Benjamin Bratt. Joan Allen will be the recipient of the Peter J. Owens Award, saluting her for a career that exemplifies brilliance, independence and integrity. Jeff Bridges will present the award to her. Paul Haggis will be receiving the inaugural Kanbar Award for excellence in screenwriting to be presented by Peter Dekom, one of Premiere magazine's 50 Most Powerful People in Hollywood. Margaret and William R. Hearst III are the chairs of the Film Society Awards Night committee. Honorary chairs are Pat and Susie McBaine. Guests will enjoy an intimate evening of entertainment, food and wine, with celebrities, heads of the film industry and San Francisco's elite. Among the supporters of the recipients scheduled to appear are actor Helen Mirren (Hackford's wife), director Sally Potter and Gary Lucchesi, president of Lakeshore Entertainment. Film Society Awards Night is a fundraising event for the benefit for the San Francisco Film Society.

GOLDEN GATE AWARDS CEREMONY

Wednesday, May 4

The Golden Gate Awards honor innovation in documentary, animation, shorts, experimental, television and youth works. These awards, as well as the SKYY Prize and the FIPRESCI Jury Prize, will be presented at the Golden Gate Awards ceremony at the Cowell Theater at Fort Mason Center, San Francisco. Join the 48th San Francisco International Film Festival in honoring this year's outstanding achievements in international cinema. The Golden Gate Awards ceremony is sponsored by The Sundance Channel and Comcast.

CLOSING NIGHT

Thursday, May 5

THE DYING GAUL Directed by Craig Lucas, starring Patricia Clarkson, Campell Scott and Peter Sarsgaard. A screenwriter mourning his lover's death is plunged into a Faustian bargain with a studio executive in this deliciously wicked Hollywood noir, adapted by award-winning playwright-turned-director Craig Lucas from his successful play of the same name. Following the film, join the party and bid this year's Festival adieu at the Closing Night festivities at Suede — one of San Francisco's most stylish and chic nightspots. Suede boasts different nightlife spaces to suit almost every mood. From the multilevel lounges or cozy VIP accommodations to the spacious dance floor, party into the night to the spins of the city's top DJs, while enjoying the tastes from Bay Area restaurateurs and mouth-watering libations.
