What is the San Francisco Film Society?
The Film Society is a nonprofit arts organization devoted to promoting the appreciation of international film. Each year we present the San Francisco International Film Festival. We also bring restored masterpieces and major retrospectives to Bay Area audiences throughout the year. Even though the name "San Francisco Film Society" was not coined until the late 1970s, we trace our ancestry to the early days of the Film Festival, when such organizations as the "Friends of the Festival" were formed for the same purpose. You can support and participate in our activities by becoming a member.

What is the San Francisco International Film Festival?
Founded in 1957, the Festival has become a showcase for nearly 200 new features, documentaries and shorts. The Festival is dedicated to highlighting current trends in international film and video production. In addition, over 1,500 submissions from all over the world of documentary and animated films, shorts and works created on video or for television are judged in the Golden Gate Awards competition.

Is the Film Festival only for people in the film industry?
On the contrary, the San Francisco International Film Festival is one of the most public-accessible (and, we hope, user-friendly) events in the city of San Francisco and one of the most open-to-everybody events on the entire film festival circuit.
